In addition to beautiful scenery and interesting history, the San Juan Islands are home to a rich variety of wildlife. Because of the varied ecosystems and biological communities of San Juan Island NHP, you'll find a diverse variety of plant life, including prairie, fir-hemlock-cedar forests, Garry oakwoodlands, thickets, intertidal areas, lagoons, and wetlands.
Prairie spans nearly half the acreage at American Camp, from the bluffs along South Beach to the south-facing slopes of Mount Finlayson. Shoreline fishing is now allowed from the public use area of Turn Island.
Turn Island is the only island within San Juan Islands NWR open for fishing and is accessible only by boat. To reduce impacts to wildlife from disturbance, please stay within the areas open to public use, and please remember to Leave No Trace by disposing of fishing line. This is actually for a three day boat camping trip to San Juan's for the nd, we anchored one night in Garrison Harbor and the next night in Reid Harbor.
Fishing was tough and slow all three days. Give them their space. The foxes of the San Juan Islands are very habituated to people because they live in such close proximity to humans. It can tempting to approach them, especially the adorable kits, but signs near American Camp remind visitors not to approach them closer than 75 feet.
We get the unique opportunity to observe amazing behaviors like hunting and nursing at fairly close range. Today, the San Juan Islands are an important tourist destination, with sea kayaking and orca whale-watching (by boat or air tours) two of the primary attractions.
